Within the Ist quarter of 2025 the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation (FMINO) intensified its commitment to enhancing nutrition awareness across Nigeria. Through strategic collaborations and innovative communication initiatives, the Ministry has played a pivotal role in promoting nutrition education and advocacy.

Strengthening Collaboration with NCFN

FMINO continued its active partnership with the National Committee on Food and Nutrition (NCFN), providing extensive media coverage for key nutrition initiatives. Notably, the Ministry facilitated radio and television broadcasts for the Nutrition 774 Initiative, a grassroots program aimed at improving nutrition indicators nationwide. Additionally, FMINO supported a roundtable discussion on scaling up the production and consumption of Tom Brown, a nutrient-dense food, in Borno State. The Ministry also covered a high-level dialogue addressing the cost of inaction on nutrition in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for increased commitment to nutrition programs.

Enhancing Public Engagement through Media

To further its mission of promoting government policies and programs, FMINO launched a weekly radio talk show titled “Awareness Creation for Food and Nutrition on Issues of the Moment.” This program addresses current and pressing nutrition topics, providing listeners with valuable information and insights. Feedback mechanisms, including phone-in segments and questionnaires, have indicated a more informed public capable of making healthier dietary choices.

Recognizing Nutrition Champions

FMINO acknowledges the efforts of the Oyo State Committee for Food and Nutrition, which has achieved a significant reduction in childhood stunting rates—from 37% in 2018 to 23% in 2023. This accomplishment underscores the impact of dedicated nutrition programs and serves as a model for other states.

Looking Ahead

The Ministry is preparing for upcoming national events, including World Breastfeeding Day and National Nutrition Week, aiming to further promote nutrition awareness and healthy practices. Despite the absence of a dedicated nutrition budget line, FMINO remains committed to leveraging its communication platforms to support nutrition initiatives and foster a well-informed populace.
