Stakeholders gathered to review and finalise the National Development Plan (NDP) 2026-2030, aligned with Nigeria Agenda 2050 with the aspiration to build a US $1trillion economy by 2030.

Speaking during the occasion, the Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, stated that the review of the 2026-2030 draft document, designed to produce a coherent, evidence based, measurable and implementation-ready development plan, will guide Nigeria’s economic and social transformation over the next five years, as Nigeria has set an ambitious goal of transitioning towards a US $1trillion economy by 2030.

She noted that the successor Plan 2026-2030, should be an improvement of the first medium-term Plan, the NDP 2021-2025, that takes cognizance of credible baselines, realistic projections, clearly identified policies and interventions, adequate financing arrangements and measurable indicators of progress.

Dr. Uzoka-Anite added that despite the fact that this review was being undertaken at a time the country is experiencing daunting economic and social challenges, the NDP 2026-2030 must identify the binding constraints of economic growth and development.

The NDP 2026-2030 is organized around seven growth pillars: (i) Macro-economic stability, resource mobilization and sustainability financing, (ii) Oil, Gas and Energy Security (iii) Economic diversification, productivity and competitiveness (iv) Productive infrastructure and environmental resilience (v) Effective Governance, institutions and public- sector transformation (vi) Peace, security and national resilience and (vii) Human capital, social development and inclusive growth.

Dr Uzoka-Anite charged the stakeholders to employ the Renewed Hope Ward-Based Development Framework Survey conducted by the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning across the 8809 wards to tackle grassroots economic realities, infrastructure deficit and local development priorities.

In a related development, the Minister inaugurated the Technical Working Group (TWG) to review the draft NDP (2026-2030). Members of the group are: Prof. Olu Ajakaiye and Prof. Mike Obadan as Chairmen, Prof. Uche Uwaleke, Prof. Adeola Adenikinju, Prof. Jonathan Aremu, Prof. Emmanuel Oladipo, Prof. Sam Amadi, Prof Usman Tar, Dr. Nguyan Shaku Feese, Prof Bongo Adi as members.

Their terms of reference include;

• Test the alignment of the vision, strategic objectives, seven pillars, sector objectives, policy direction and interventions with Nigeria Agenda 2050, the Renewed Hope and the ambition of the diversified, inclusive and resilient US $1 trillion economy by 2030.

• Review baselines, indicators, assumptions and proposed targets, determine or recommend realistic but ambitious 2030 targets; and document the rationale for material adjustments.

• Submit a consolidated, technically reviewed and implementation-ready plan, supported by a matrix, a policy-and-intervention matrix, an institutional responsibility framework and a concise record of key revisions and outstanding policy choices amongst others.

In her welcome remarks earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Deborah Odoh reiterated that participants were tasked to produce a coherent, credible and implementation-ready Plan which is expected to align with Nigeria's Agenda 2050 and national development priorities in addition to organizing them consistently across its seven strategic pillars.

She continued that the team is expected to resolve gaps duplication and inconsistencies across chapters, validate key data macroeconomic assumptions, sectoral targets and results indicators as well as strengthen the links between priorities, interventions, financing, institutional responsibilities and monitoring arrangements. Dr. Odoh said that the final document must provide a practical basis for the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework, Annual Budgets and sectoral investment decisions.

Stakeholders at the retreat were drawn the Academia, Development Partners, Business Community and Civil Society Organizations, amongst other sectors of the country
