Babatunde Lawal 

Director, Macroeconomic Analysis Department - Since May 2011 

Born on the 28th of May, 1964, Babatunde Lawal is from Lagos Island Local Government Area of Lagos State. He attended the School of Basic Studies, Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta and the University of Lagos, Akoka, where he obtained Higher School Certificate and a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics respectively. He thereafter, obtained Masters degree in Economics with bias in Project Analysis and Evaluation from the University of Lagos. 

A reputable Planner and Economist, Mr. Babatunde lawal commenced his working career with the National Planning Commission in 1987. He was appointed Acting Director of the Macroeconomic Analysis Department of the Commission in July 2010 and became the Director of the Department in May 2011. Prior to this time, he served in various capacities in several Committees and with Chief Executive Officers of several MDAs. Mr. Lawal was the Personal Assistant to the Director General, Federal Ministry of Budget and Planning (1991 – 92), Personal Assistant to the Hon. Minister of National Planning (Mid 1995 – 97 & 1998 – Mid 1999) and Special Assistant to the Macroeconomic Adviser to the Vice president (2001 – 2003). He served as the Personal Assistant to the Director General (Projects), and Secretary to the Presidential Committee on the Monitoring and Evaluation of Federal Government Projects, SGF’s Office in the Presidency (1992 – 93). He was also the presidential Liaison Officer for the Panel on Reform and Reorganization of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Jan-Oct, 1994).

Mr. Lawal had attended over 20 critical local and international training programmes including Leading Economic Growth and Leadership Development Programme both organized by Harvard Kennedy School, Boston, USA in 2012 and 2013 respectively. He had equally attended several local and international workshops, seminars and conferences and made over 300 paper presentations as well as served as panel discussant at seminars, workshops and conferences. He has written some research papers including; The Estimation of Scale Economies and Factor Elasticity of Substitution of the Nigerian Brewery Industry.

As Director, Macroeconomic Economic Analysis of the Commission, Mr. Lawal superintends over the organization of the annual Conference of Directors of Planning Research and Statistics at the MDAs and had equally been co-chairing the Joint Planning Committee responsible for the organization of the Annual Nigeria Economic Summit. Among the notable assignments undertaken by Mr. Lawal since assuming the Directorship at the Commission includes the Technical Committee Chairman to the Presidential Committee on the Democracy day celebration who produced the Mid-Term Report of the Transformation Agenda; Technical Chairman of the Ministerial Committee on the finalization of Nigerian Road Safety Strategy of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC); Chairman National Steering Committee on the computation of State level GDP in Nigeria; among others. He has equally coordinated the production of periodic Reports on the performance of the Nigerian Economy.

For his achievements, Mr. lawal is the recipient of scores of awards and recognitions from Civil Society Organizations; NGOs; private sector organizations; professional associations; among others. Mr. Babatunde Lawal, who is a life member, Nigerian Economic Society; Member, Ikoyi Club and Member, Island Club of Nigeria, Lagos, loves Reading, Table Tennis and Listening to Music. He is happily married.
